What are the most common forklift truck accidents - and how to avoid them

Forklifts can be very dangerous machines; always operate with caution, and care, and always pay attention to the surroundings.

Tipovers are the most common accidents with forklifts - these are often caused due to mispalcing loads, inclines, driving/operating at the wrong speed, or simply overloading the forklift.

Tipovers often occur when you are driving down ramps, or you brake suddenly, or when the mast is not tilted correctly. Tipovers can also occur when you turn suddenly, or drive too quickly, and make a sudden movement.

Tipovers are very dangerous, and can injure operators, and other operatives. To avoid tipovers, it is essential that every operator is trained to use the forklift, and uses common sense, such as keeping the load low when using the forklift, turning slowly, and driving at a safe, appropriate speed, observing the area where the forklift is in use. Always observe the data plate, when using a forklift, which will provide vital information about safe load capacity.

Always keep the load as low as possible when operating a forklift, maintain a safe driving speed, and exercise caution when turning the forklift.
