The tyres of your forklift are just as important as the lifting mechanisms, and if you want to keep operations moving smoothly – you need to keep your tyres in top condition.

    Forklift Tyre Types

The two most common types of forklift tyres are pneumatic and solid tyres, however there are some more specialist types available.

    Pneumatic Forklift Tyres

These tyres are inflated with air, known as pneumatic forklift tyres, provide a cushioning effect to absorb impact. Pneumatic tyres can be used in both indoor and outdoor environments, but especially where terrain is rough or uneven. Pneumatic tyres are also suitable for large forklifts where solid tyres would add strain to the machinery.

    Solid Forklift Tyres

Solid forklift tyres are made of solid rubber – meaning they won’t puncture and deflate like pneumatic tyres. This durable and low maintenance tyre is best used on even and smooth terrains, due to it not being able to absorb impact like a pneumatic tyre, however can be used in environments with sharp debris as the tyre will not puncture.

    Forklift Tyre Wear and Tear

Wear and tear is inevitable. As tyres become worn, they pose a danger; tyres can lose grip or cause uneven operation which can lead to the forklift slipping, tipping over, or skidding, as well as marking the flooring. It may also fail to absorb shock, placing stress and additional vibration on the operator, load and engine, which can lead to further damage.

    Forklift Tyre Maintenance and Inspections

You should regularly inspect forklift tyres. This includes a daily check for signs of wear and tear as well as a weekly check of air pressure in pneumatic tyres.

To check for wear and tear, look out for cracks and uneven wear patterns on the tyres. Pneumatic tyres should have at least 1.6mm of tread across the centre 3/4 of the tread, around the circumference of the whole tyre.

    Forklift Tyre Repair Assessment

Repairs can be applied to minor damage, such as punctures or cuts. Repairs should be carried out by competent people, and pneumatic tyres should never be repaired whilst in situ. Plugs and patches can be applied to minor punctures and cuts to repair the tyre.

More significant damage will require the tyre to be replaced, for which you should use a reputable forklift tyre repair service to avoid potential safety issues.

    Safe Forklift Repairs

Safety should always be a priority whilst working with forklifts and this is why working with competent people whilst undertaking repairs or replacements is advised. Any work undertaken to a tyre or forklift should not jeopardise the operator’s safety, or the forklift and tyre. By working with experienced technicians who have the appropriate equipment, tools, and training, you can ensure that any repairs or tyre replacements carried out will be done so safely.

    Forklift Tyre Repair: FAQs

Most types of forklift tyres have and need tread, but there are some types which do not. And there are some - such as cushion tyres - which can come either with tread or without. In general, you should assume that forklift tyres need tread until you know otherwise.

Of course, it always depends on a number of factors, but forklift tyre cost can be reduced in a number of ways. One of the main ways is to replace your forklift tyres through us at Atlasforklift, because we will always offer the best prices.

It is difficult to place a particular timing on when to replace your forklift tyres. It is more to do with the tread. Once the tread is nearing its lower legal limit, that is when you need to make sure you are replacing the tyres.

Heat expands tyres, which means you need to have them at a different pressure - if they are the type that contains pressurised air. So you need to make sure that you are checking this if you want them to last a long time.

Hard tyres generally provide less grip, which means that they will last a lot longer. This means you will be spending less money in the long run compared to soft tyres.

Some of the more common failure reasons include low pressure, no tread and overuse. In any case, the solution is to replace them.

It depends on the type of tyre. For something like a pneumatic tyre, there is no need for compressed air, whereas with other types there will be. You should always check with the specific type of tyre that you are using.

Rotating the tyres is a really powerful way to make sure you are increasing the lifespan of the tyres, so it’s something you should certainly make sure you do from time to time. It ensures the tread wears down on all tyres at an even rate.

Heat expands tyres, which means you need to have them at a different pressure - if they are the type that contains pressurised air. So you need to make sure that you are checking this if you want them to last a long time.

One of the main ones is that the tread has reduced down. You can often tell this by sight, and it means that you need to look into changing your tyres as soon as possible to keep them safe and legal.

If it is very hot, this can expand and soften the tyres, and it will mean that you need to check the pressure on them. They might not be operating as well as normal.

    Forklift & Industrial Wheel Rims

The forklift & industrial wheel rim is a profiled steel band supporting the tyre

The wheel rim is a profiled steel band which supports the tyre. If a nave plate is welded into the band to the appropriate specification this is then termed a wheel.

Some rims do have a hub mounting plate (nave) and are attached to the hub by a matching taper under the lock ring gutter, these are known as DEMOUNTABLE wheels.

There are several types of rim technically known as well-base rim (typically known as one-piece):

    • Semi drop centre rim or split rim
    • Tapered bead seat rim
    • Flat base rim

The wheel disc or nave is the element linking the rim and the axle hub. The strength of the wheel is approved by all wheel manufacturers.

Wheels and rims only tend to get damaged if the tyres are allowed to wear below an acceptable level which in itself can cause damage to the forklift truck or industrial machine. The safety of the machine is also affected greatly.

Solid Resilient Forklift & Industrial Tyres

Extremely stable, puncture resistant and generally maintenance free

There are a number of potentially confusing descriptions used to identify industrial tyres. Solid resilient tyres are also known as pneumatic shaped solids and super elastic. The terminology used by each manufacturer differs slightly but they all do the same job. These tyres are best for tough applications on slow vehicles or trailers where there may be a high risk of impact and cut damage which could result in punctures. They are extremely stable puncture resistant and generally maintenance free.

The tyre construction is an exceptionally tough and wear resistant outer tread with an inner cushion compound that gives it good impact and anti vibration – damping properties.

They are suitable for forklift trucks indoor service trailers, airport vehicles, sideloading forklifts, industrial tractors, platform trucks and heavy duty transport vehicles.

Applications where they can be found include logistics centres, seaports, airports, steel industry, food and pharmaceutical. Almost in fact any where any product is bought and sold. They are capable of running on rougher surfaces in yards and builders merchants. Tyres can also be ordered in non marking environments where the customer wants to maintain an extremely clean floor, hence used in the food industry.

Cushion Press-on Forklift & Industrial Tyres

    Puncture proof and maintenance free

Can often be called press on bands and are usually supplied in either treaded or plain. Generally lower in profile and offer no “suspension” type absorption. This type of tyre is classed as puncture proof and maintenance free. These tyres are ordinarily fitted by experts using solid tyre presses and can be done on site or removed and done elsewhere.

Usually and typically fitted to all electric forklift trucks and is the main product used in Britain.

All warehouse applications is where you would find these tyres and again they can be supplied in non marking and anti static dependent upon customer requirements.

Pneumatic Forklift & Industrial Tyres and Tubes

Pneumatic variant of the resilient forklift tyre

Pneumatic tyres and tubes are now not so common and have really been overtaken by the resilient solid tyre. But are still used because of the ability to absorb shock on unpaved ground and where trucks travel at higher speeds. Some trucks are also used on public roads this tyre is the recommended type for that use. There only advantage is rider comfort but they do bounce more so can be a little more unstable.
